Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 2 Officially Opens
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) officially opened its upgraded Terminal 2 (T2) on May 27, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the city's development as a global aviation hub.
🌟 A Grand Opening
The HK$12.9 billion expansion project was inaugurated with an opening ceremony on May 22, followed by the official commissioning of the departure facilities on May 27. On its first day of operation, T2 welcomed approximately 4,200 passengers, with the first flight being a Hong Kong Airlines service to Shanghai Pudong. AAHK Chairman Fred Lam described the opening as "another milestone of HKIA's development," emphasizing the terminal's role in showcasing Hong Kong's multicultural charm.
✈️ Capacity and Airline Relocation
Designed to handle 30 million passengers annually, T2 boosts the airport's total capacity to 100 million passengers per year when combined with Terminal 1's 70 million capacity. Starting May 27, 15 airlines began relocating their check-in services to T2 in phases, including three local carriers (Hong Kong Airlines, Greater Bay Airlines, and HK Express). The relocation is scheduled for completion by June 10.
💡 A Smart and Efficient Terminal
The 300,000-square-meter terminal is positioned as a hub for leisure travel with a strong focus on technology and efficiency. Key features include:
- Smart Check-in: 58 smart check-in kiosks and 68 express self-bag-drop counters allow passengers to complete the entire check-in process in as little as 45 seconds.
- Enhanced Security: 15 smart security screening channels enable passengers to keep laptops and liquids under 100ml inside their carry-on bags during screening, improving efficiency by 50%.
- Facial Recognition: 20 e-Security Gates use facial recognition technology, with the minimum usage age lowered from 11 to 7 years.
🚇 Connectivity and Access
T2 is seamlessly connected to the city's transport network:
- Airport Express: The MTR Airport Express station connects T2 via platforms 3 and 4, with doors opening on both sides for direct access.
- Buses and Parking: 29 bus routes serve T2, and a new Car Park 3 with over 1,000 parking spaces is linked via a covered walkway.
🔮 What's Next for T2
Currently, passengers check in at T2 and use an automated people mover to reach T1 for boarding. The arrival facilities are expected to commence operations by the end of 2027, along with the completion of T2's own boarding gates and bridges.
The opening of T2 is a key component of HKIA's transformation into a comprehensive "Airport City" and supports the full operation of the three-runway system, further solidifying Hong Kong's status as a leading international aviation hub.
