On the afternoon of May 23, 2024, Tesla Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory officially started construction in Shanghai Lingang New Area. This is Tesla's first energy storage Gigafactory project outside the United States.

According to CCTV News, the factory is expected to be put into operation in the first quarter of 2025. Once put into operation, the output of the ultra-large electrochemical commercial energy storage system Megapack will reach 10,000 units, with an energy storage scale of nearly 40 gigawatt hours (GWh). According to reports, this is Tesla’s first energy storage super factory outside the United States. It is also Tesla’s other large-scale investment project in China after the Shanghai Super Factory in the past ten years since its entry into China.

Public information shows that Tesla’s Shanghai energy storage factory covers a total area of approximately 200,000 square meters and has a total investment of approximately 1.45 billion yuan. The Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory mainly produces Megapack, ultra-large commercial energy storage batteries, for supply to the global market.
