China's direct economic losses from natural disasters in July exceeded 76.8 billion yuan
In July this year, China suffered natural disasters such as heavy rains, floods, and typhoons, which caused 26.398 million people across the country to be affected to varying degrees, 328 people died or went missing due to the disasters, and direct economic losses amounted to RMB 76.85 billion.
According to a press release released on the official website of China's Ministry of Emergency Management on Thursday (August 8, 2024), in July this year, China's natural disasters were mainly rainstorms, floods, typhoons and geological disasters, and wind, hail, earthquakes, forest fires, etc. also occurred to varying degrees. Various natural disasters caused 26.398 million people to be affected to varying degrees across the country, 328 people died or went missing due to disasters, and 1.103 million people were urgently relocated and resettled; 12,000 houses collapsed, 157,000 houses were damaged; 2420.6 thousand hectares of crops were affected; and direct economic losses were 76.85 billion yuan.
According to reports, China experienced seven heavy rainfall processes in July, with an average precipitation of 132.9 mm, 11% more than the same period of previous years. China's 21 rivers experienced the largest floods since measured data, and the daily precipitation of 33 meteorological stations such as Sheqi, Henan, Pingyi, Shandong, and Hengshan, Hunan also broke historical extremes. Henan, one of China's major cash crop producing areas, suffered extremely heavy rainfall in mid-July. Nanyang Sheqi County, Tanghe County and other places were severely flooded. The affected area of crops was more than 11.3 thousand hectares, and some crops in the fields were completely lost due to stagnant water.
