A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Gaoxian County in Yibin City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, at 0:12 a.m. Beijing Time on June 29, 2026, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

Earthquake Parameters

The epicenter was located at 28.50 degrees north latitude and 104.69 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 6 kilometers. The epicenter was situated in Shawan Town, Gaoxian County. Residents in Gaoxian County and neighboring Gongxian County reported strong tremors, with furniture visibly displaced indoors. Tremors were also felt in Yibin City and Chengdu, the provincial capital.

Impact and Casualties

According to reports from the Yibin City Earthquake Relief Command Center, the earthquake caused no fatalities. It resulted in 13 minor injuries, all of whom received timely medical treatment. A total of 196 people were relocated under emergency evacuation procedures. The earthquake caused 21 houses to develop cracks, with 3 homes sustaining more serious structural damage, affecting 10 residents who were relocated to the homes of relatives nearby. Approximately 12 instances of rockfalls on roads were reported and have been cleared. Transportation, power, and communication services in the epicenter area remain operational.

Emergency Response

The China Earthquake Administration activated a Level-III emergency response following the earthquake. The Sichuan Provincial Earthquake Administration dispatched a field team to assist with emergency operations. Fire and rescue forces from the Yibin detachment reached the epicenter in Shawan Town by 1:00 a.m. to assess the situation.
