China's First School of Endangered Disciplines Officially Established
China has established its first-ever university-level college dedicated to "endangered and obscure disciplines" (冷门绝学), a field of study focused on preserving knowledge systems that are at risk of being lost. The College of Endangered and Obscure Disciplines was inaugurated at the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (UCASS) in Beijing on November 6, 2026, alongside the launch of the National Alliance for Endangered and Obscure Disciplines.
🏛️ A Dedicated Institutional Home
The new college is a substantive academic entity within UCASS, created to ensure that these fields—often characterized by difficult-to-master scripts, scarce surviving materials, and long research cycles—are not lost to history. It is supported by a faculty team led by eight academic division members and 30 national-level talent program experts, spanning multiple generations of scholars.
📜 Core Research Areas and Structure
The college’s academic scope is organized around four teaching and research departments and a dedicated Digital-Intelligent Laboratory for Endangered Disciplines:
- Oracle Bone and Bamboo/Silk Manuscript Studies
- Northern Ethnic Ancient Scripts (including Turkic, Tangut, Khitan, Uyghur, and Manchu)
- Southwestern Ethnic Ancient Scripts (including Ancient Tibetan and Ancient Yi)
- Classical Civilizations of China and the West
This structure aims to build a full-chain academic support platform—from deciphering ancient scripts and collating rare texts to conducting comparative studies across civilizations.
🎓 Innovative Training Model
The college has introduced a distinctive pedagogical approach designed to cultivate top-tier talent in these long-cycle fields:
- Dual-Mentor System: A “chief mentor + interdisciplinary associate mentor” model, pairing primary academic guidance with cross-disciplinary perspectives.
- Integrated Bachelor’s–Master’s–Doctoral Track: A through-train system that reduces student anxiety over progression and allows for deep, sustained immersion in research.
- Apprenticeship-Style Training: Small-group, hands-on transmission of scholarly skills, akin to traditional craft apprenticeship.
- Research-Driven Learning: Students are integrated into major national research tasks, with document collation and academic practicum embedded throughout the training process.
🤝 A National Alliance
On the same day, UCASS initiated the National Alliance for Endangered and Obscure Disciplines, which has already attracted over 80 member institutions, including universities, research institutes, and cultural heritage and museum organizations. The alliance aims to pool national resources, share linguistic and textual corpora, and coordinate talent cultivation, embodying the principle of “making the obscure not isolated, and the endangered not extinct” (冷门不冷、绝学不绝).
💡 Background and Significance
The initiative builds on UCASS’s earlier establishment of a Collaborative Innovation Research Institute for Endangered Disciplines in 2024. The creation of a full-fledged college and a national alliance represents an institutionalized effort to safeguard fields that, while niche, are seen as vital to tracing the roots of Chinese civilization, clarifying historical facts, and building China’s cultural discourse. It reflects a broader policy emphasis on protecting disciplines of important cultural value and传承 significance, ensuring they have both practitioners and a future.
