On June 5, 2026, a vice president of Chongqing University of Technology was fatally stabbed, and the suspect is a fellow professor at the same university, according to local police .

The victim was identified as Liao Linqing, 60, who served as a vice president of the university. The suspect, a 58-year-old associate professor identified as Wang from the university's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, has been detained by the police .

Incident Details

The stabbing occurred around 6 a.m. on June 5 at a residential community in Banan District, Chongqing. The community, known as Ligong Yayuan, is located near the university's main gate and is primarily inhabited by university faculty and staff .

According to an official statement from the Banan District Branch of the Chongqing Public Security Bureau, the suspect attacked his colleague, Liao, with a knife due to a "workplace dispute." Liao was fatally wounded .

Alleged Motive

Chinese media reports indicate that the incident may have been triggered by long-standing work-related grievances. Unverified online reports suggest that Wang believed he had been repeatedly blocked from professional advancement over many years, and he allegedly held Liao responsible as the primary obstacle preventing his promotion from associate professor to full professor .

According to these reports, Wang was scheduled to retire the following month. It is alleged that he hid in bushes along the vice president's route home and ambushed him in the early morning .

Following the attack, a video circulating online reportedly shows the suspect at the scene with blood on his hands, shouting emotionally: "I am acting on behalf of heaven and removing a scourge for the people. Check online—many people have reported him; he caused so many students to suffer from depression." The wife of the suspect was reportedly seen crying at the scene, saying, "Without reaching the point of desperation, who would dare to kill?"
