Beijing's Zhengyangmen Gate Tower Reopens to the Public
On July 27, 2026, the Zhengyangmen Gate Tower (正阳门城楼) in Beijing officially reopened to the public after six years of closure. The reopening coincided with the second anniversary of the Beijing Central Axis being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Historical Significance
Zhengyangmen Gate Tower is a pivotal landmark along Beijing's 7.8-kilometer-long Central Axis and a key heritage site within the UNESCO World Heritage designation. Construction of the gate tower began in 1419 during the Ming Dynasty. Together with the Zhengyangmen Arrow Tower to the south, it forms what was historically the largest gate of Beijing's inner and outer city walls during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The gate tower was previously open to the public in 1991 but was closed for restoration and renovation starting in 2020. The restoration work was completed at the end of 2025.

The reopened gate tower offers visitors a variety of experiences:
- Panoramic Views: From the tower, visitors can view the Zhengyangmen Arrow Tower to the south, Tian'anmen Square and the Monument to the People's Heroes to the north, the National Museum of China to the east, and the Great Hall of the People to the west.
- Exhibition Hall: The first floor of the gate tower features a permanent exhibition titled "Weiwei Zhengyang" (Lofty Zhengyang), which displays artifacts, historical images, and scale models illustrating over 600 years of the tower's history and its role in Beijing's urban development.
- Amenities: A coffee and tea area, along with a cultural and creative merchandise space, has been set up inside the tower.
- Self-Guided Exploration: The area around the gate tower features 16 designated photo spots, including the ancient arched passageways, Ming Dynasty stone lions, the World Heritage monument, and the "Zero Kilometer Point" marker for China's road network.
