A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Longchang City in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 1:13 p.m. Beijing Time on August 28, 2026, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

Earthquake Parameters

The epicenter was located at 29.23 degrees north latitude and 105.22 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 13 kilometers. The epicenter is approximately 14 kilometers from Longchang City, 42 kilometers from Neijiang City, and 134 kilometers from Chongqing. The tremor was strongly felt in Longchang, as well as in Neijiang, Luzhou, Ziyang, and parts of Chongqing.

Seismic Context

According to the CENC rapid reporting catalog, there have been 238 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or above within 200 kilometers of this epicenter over the past five years. The largest among them was the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck Luxian County, Luzhou City, on September 16, 2021, located approximately 12 kilometers from the current epicenter.

Emergency Response

The China Earthquake Administration (CEA) activated a Level-III emergency response following the earthquake. The Sichuan Provincial Seismological Bureau also initiated a Level-III emergency response and dispatched a field team from the Zigong Seismic Monitoring Center to the affected area. The Sichuan Fire and Rescue Brigade deployed advance teams from the Neijiang and Zigong detachments to the epicenter to assess the situation.

Impact and Casualties

As of the latest reports, no casualties or significant property damage have been reported. Local authorities have completed an initial round of disaster assessments and confirmed no house collapses. Power, communication, and transportation services in the epicenter and surrounding townships remain operational.
