On September 7, 2026, Chinese tech giant Huawei launched the Mate XT 2 tri-fold smartphone, powered by its new flagship Kirin 9050 Pro chipset. This marks Huawei's first new Kirin chip at a flagship launch since the Mate 40 series six years ago.

Logic Folding Technology

The Kirin 9050 Pro is the first high-performance processor to use "logic folding" technology. Instead of a traditional planar layout, logic units are stacked in layers within a single chip—similar to upgrading from a single-floor layout to a duplex. Vertical interconnect channels are added, shortening signal transmission paths, reducing latency, and improving performance.

The technology is part of Huawei's "Tao Law" (韬定律), which proposes replacing "geometric shrinking" with "time shrinking" as a new guiding principle for semiconductor evolution. By vertically stacking logic units using existing DUV lithography, the chip achieves performance comparable to more advanced nodes without relying on EUV lithography. The 40nm bonding process achieves approximately 1.5μm bonding pitch and about 500,000 vertical interconnects per square millimeter.

Performance and Specifications

Despite being on the same process node as its predecessor, the Kirin 9030 Pro, the 9050 Pro achieves a 55% increase in transistor density—from approximately 155 million to 238 million per square millimeter. This is equivalent to three years of gains from traditional geometric shrinking.

Key components include:

  • Lingxi CPU with hyper-threading: 24% single-core peak performance improvement, 52% multi-core concurrent performance improvement
  • Maliang GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing: Supports 50 million lines of real-time ray tracing, rendering performance improved by 142%
  • Da Vinci architecture NPU: Supports on-device MoE full-modal large models with 30B total parameters and 2B active parameters

Power Efficiency

Under the same performance conditions, the chip achieves significant power reduction compared to the previous generation:

  • NPU power consumption reduced by 66%
  • GPU power consumption reduced by 58%
  • CPU performance core power consumption reduced by 41%

Overall System Performance

With deep synergy between hardware, software, chips, and cloud, the overall system performance is improved by 42% compared to the previous generation.

Availability

The Kirin 9050 Pro debuts exclusively in the Huawei Mate XT 2 tri-fold smartphone, with a starting price of 19,999 yuan.
