A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck the Panlong District of Kunming, the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, at 6:31 p.m. Beijing Time on September 30, 2026, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

Earthquake Parameters

The epicenter was located in Jinchen Subdistrict, Panlong District, at 25.09 degrees north latitude and 102.73 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

Tremors and Impact

The earthquake was strongly felt across the city. A reporter in downtown Kunming described noticeable shaking, with ceiling lamps swaying visibly in high-rise buildings. A local resident surnamed Zhang reported that shaking was evident on upper floors of office buildings, with windows rattling. Many residents took to social media to describe the tremors, with some saying their "house was shaking".

As of the latest reports, no casualties or property damage have been reported in Panlong, Wuhua, Xishan, Guandu, and Chenggong districts. Power, transportation, and communications services remain operational.

Emergency Response

Following the earthquake, the Yunnan Provincial Earthquake Relief Headquarters activated a Level IV emergency response for Kunming at 7:00 p.m. on September 30, in accordance with the provincial earthquake emergency plan. The China Earthquake Networks Center also initiated a Level III emergency service response, conducting joint consultations with the Yunnan Provincial Earthquake Bureau on seismic trends and disaster assessment.

The China Railway Kunming Group immediately activated its emergency response, halting trains in the affected sections and dispatching personnel to inspect railway infrastructure. As a result, several passenger trains departing from and arriving in Kunming experienced delays. The railway authority advised passengers to monitor schedule changes and noted that delayed tickets could be refunded without charge.
