Apple's first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is being exclusively assembled by Foxconn at its facilities in China, marking a significant milestone in Apple's manufacturing partnership with the Chinese contract manufacturer.

Manufacturing Partnership

Foxconn's Zhengzhou campus in Henan Province serves as the primary assembly site for the iPhone Duo. According to Apple's Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan, the Zhengzhou facility "can be described as the largest factory for manufacturing iPhones, and even the largest smartphone manufacturing factory in the world". Foxconn has been Apple's assembly partner since the first-generation iPhone in 2007, and the Zhengzhou plant is dedicated specifically to serving Apple.

Production Challenges and Innovations

The iPhone Duo presents unique manufacturing challenges, primarily in controlling the flatness of the folding area and reducing screen creases. The device's hinge is composed of over 100 micro-components that must precisely match both sides of the body to ensure smooth opening and closing.

To overcome these challenges, Apple and Foxconn redesigned the production process and developed custom automation equipment. The production line uses confocal laser scanning to map the microscopic topography of the folding area, then employs machine learning algorithms to generate dynamic filling solutions. Finally, micron-level 3D printing is used to create up to 25 layers of custom photosensitive polymer coatings, building a smooth support substrate for the screen.

Foxconn has also introduced semiconductor manufacturing processes into final assembly. A physical vapor deposition (PVD) sputtering process is applied to the SoC chip surface, replacing traditional metal shielding covers. This innovation reduces module thickness by 20% and significantly improves heat dissipation. This project, launched in July 2026, is already applied to both the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro series.

Executive Visit and Production Status

On October 11, 2026, ahead of the iPhone Duo's pre-sale period, Apple COO Sabih Khan visited the Zhengzhou Foxconn campus to inspect the production line. When asked about production capacity, Khan stated that the team is "currently expanding production scale according to Apple's consistently high quality standards" and that "the production line is very busy, and everyone is excited".

The visit also served to dispel market rumors about yield rate issues. Industry analysts noted that Khan's presence at the Zhengzhou plant was intended to "break external doubts about iPhone Duo yield rate 'bottlenecks' and prove that Apple's first foldable phone is ready for market".

Market Context and Pricing

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable device and its most expensive smartphone to date. It features a horizontal inward-folding design, with a 5.4-inch outer display and an approximately 7.6-inch inner display when unfolded. The unfolded body is 5.2 millimeters thick.

The device is scheduled for pre-order on October 16, 2026, and official release on October 23, 2026, with a starting price of 15,999 yuan in China. Industry analysts predict Apple may sell approximately 6 million units of the iPhone Duo in 2026.
