5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Turpan, Xinjiang
A magnitude-5.0 earthquake struck Toksun County in Turpan City, Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at 2:55 p.m. Beijing Time on May 29, 2026 .
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the epicenter was located at 42.20 degrees north latitude and 88.22 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 20 kilometers .
No casualties or significant property damage have been reported so far. The earthquake was strongly felt in Kumishi Town, located near the epicenter, as well as in Toksun County, the Gaochang District of Turpan, and Urumqi, which is about 184 kilometers away . Local authorities have initiated emergency response procedures, and all essential services, including communications, power supplies, and traffic, are operating normally .
