On July 18, 2026, a flash flood struck the Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Gorge) scenic area in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, following heavy rainfall.

Incident Details

The flash flood occurred at the Yuxinqiao River section of the scenic area, where the water level rose sharply in a short period due to intense localized rainfall. The floodwater rushed down along mountain gullies and pedestrian walkways, submerging parts of the trails and causing damage including collapsed buildings. Some visitors were temporarily stranded in the area.

Emergency Response and Casualties

The scenic area immediately activated its emergency response plan and coordinated with local government, fire rescue, emergency management, and tourism authorities to carry out rescue operations. All stranded tourists were safely transferred by 7:05 p.m. on July 18. The incident resulted in zero casualties and no major property damage.

Closure and Safety Measures

To ensure visitor safety, the Tiger Leaping Gorge scenic area has been temporarily closed since 7:00 a.m. on July 19, 2026. The reopening schedule will be determined based on weather conditions and road safety assessments. The management has stated it will strengthen monitoring, early warning systems, and regular hazard inspections along riverbanks, valley sections, and low-lying areas.
