On the evening of August 6, 2026, an accident occurred during Torch Festival celebrations in Xuanwei City, Yunnan Province, leaving 16 people with varying degrees of burns.

Incident Details

The incident took place at around 8:30 p.m. in the Wusa village group, Jianwen Village Committee, Lefeng Township, Xuanwei City. While villagers were using flammable liquid to ignite torches during the festival celebrations, a plastic container holding the liquid accidentally tipped over and caught fire, causing the burns to 16 people at the scene.

Emergency Response

Local authorities immediately activated the emergency response plan upon the incident. Health, emergency management, and public security departments, along with local township officials, were dispatched to the site to provide treatment to the injured and maintain public order.

Casualty Status

All 16 injured individuals are receiving treatment in hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. Follow-up work is proceeding in an orderly manner.

The Torch Festival is a traditional celebration of the Yi people and other ethnic groups such as Bai, Naxi, and Lahu in southwestern China, held during the sixth month of the traditional Chinese calendar as an expression of wishes for good weather, abundant harvests, and community well-being.
