On August 8, 2026, a China Southern Airlines flight was struck by lightning while taxiing at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, causing significant delays and prompting the airline to replace the aircraft.

Incident Details

The flight involved was China Southern Airlines CZ3209, scheduled to travel from Shenzhen to Wuxi. During the taxiing process in Shenzhen, the aircraft was suspected to have been struck by a very close lightning strike amid heavy thunderstorms. The pilot soon announced the decision to return to the gate for inspection. The aircraft was subsequently delayed for about 3 hours; the original departure time of 4:30 p.m. was pushed back to 8:40 p.m..

Findings and Response

Following a thorough inspection, maintenance crews confirmed that the aircraft had sustained approximately over 20 lightning strike points on its belly and elevator surfaces. According to Southern Airlines, the airline then arranged a replacement aircraft of the same model (CZ6630) for the passengers to ensure safety and minimize further delays. The damaged plane was repaired later that night and returned to service the following day.

In response to public concerns, Southern Airlines staff explained that the aircraft's outer shell is made of conductive aluminum alloy. This design allows lightning current to flow along the exterior of the fuselage without entering the cabin.
