China's Hydrogen Production Capacity Exceeds 51 Million Tons Per Year
China's annual hydrogen production capacity surpassed 51 million tons as of the end of 2025, according to the China Hydrogen Energy Development Report (2026) released by the National Energy Administration (NEA) on August 11, 2026 .
Key Statistics
The report revealed that by the end of 2025, China's hydrogen production capacity exceeded 51 million tons per year, representing a year-on-year growth of approximately 1.4% . The actual hydrogen output for the year reached over 39 million tons, up approximately 7.3% compared to the previous year .
Renewable Hydrogen Production
In addition to overall capacity, the report highlighted significant progress in green hydrogen. As of June 2026, the combined capacity of built and under-construction renewable hydrogen production projects across China exceeded 1.4 million tons per year . This includes over 270,000 tons per year already operational and more than 1.13 million tons per year under construction, with water electrolysis being the primary production route .
China and Europe together contribute over 70% of global renewable hydrogen production capacity .
Infrastructure Development
The hydrogen infrastructure is also expanding steadily. By June 2026, China had built approximately 620 hydrogen refueling stations across the country . Additionally, more than 350 kilometers of dedicated pure hydrogen pipelines had been completed and put into operation .

The report indicates that China's hydrogen energy industry continues to expand in scale, maintaining a global leading position in both production and consumption. The country is advancing the orderly development of a clean and efficient hydrogen supply system .
