On August 29, 2026, Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) officially announced that its next-generation LPDDR6 memory has entered mass production and will make its global commercial debut in Xiaomi's upcoming flagship foldable smartphone, the Xiaomi 18 Fold.

Performance Specifications

According to CXMT's 2026 semi-annual report, the company's self-developed LPDDR6 chips deliver a comprehensive performance upgrade over the previous-generation LPDDR5X. Through architectural innovation and data transfer optimization, the chips achieve a peak data rate of 12,800 Mbps and a maximum capacity of 16GB per chip. The CXMT implementation runs at 10,667 MT/s with the Xring O3 chipset and can reach up to 12,800 MT/s.

"Chip-Memory" Synergy

The announcement coincides with Xiaomi's recent unveiling of its flagship mobile processor, the Xuanjie O3 (Xring O3), which is the industry's first System-on-Chip (SoC) to support LPDDR6 memory. The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be the first device to combine Xiaomi's self-developed processor with domestically produced LPDDR6 memory.

Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun commented on Weibo: "Congratulations to CXMT on achieving mass production of LPDDR6 memory – truly remarkable! Xuanjie O3 is the first to support CXMT LPDDR6, and Xiaomi 18 Fold will be the first to feature it. I believe this is just the beginning – more outstanding Chinese tech companies will join forces and scale new heights".

Industry Significance

This marks the first commercial deployment of LPDDR6 products globally, representing the first time a Chinese memory manufacturer has achieved a global first-to-market milestone in a high-end memory standard. It also signifies that China's domestic memory industry has broken the long-standing first-mover advantage held by Samsung and SK Hynix in advanced mobile memory.

Industry observers view the "chip-memory" collaboration as a breakthrough in China's semiconductor ecosystem, demonstrating that domestic core components can meet the rigorous standards of flagship smartphones. With AI demand surging, LPDDR6 is seen as a critical enabler for on-device AI computing power, with applications spanning smartphones, PCs, smart cockpits, and AI data centers.

Availability

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is scheduled for release in September 2026. The device is also expected to feature a 7.6-inch display, a 60,000mAh battery with wireless charging, and a 200-megapixel main camera.
