A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Beichuan County in Mianyang City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, at 7:39 p.m. Beijing Time on September 3, 2026, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The epicenter was located at 31.91 degrees north latitude and 104.43 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers. The average altitude within 5 kilometers of the epicenter is approximately 1,140 meters. The epicenter is located about 33 kilometers from Beichuan County seat, 33 kilometers from Jiangyou City, and 55 kilometers from Mianyang City.

Seismic Context

The earthquake occurred on the Longmenshan Fault Zone, a major seismic belt in the region. According to the CENC catalog, there have been 64 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or above within 200 kilometers of this epicenter over the past five years.

Local authorities in Beichuan County, Jiangyou City, and Mao County in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture all reported noticeable tremors. Residents in several other cities also reported feeling the shaking, including Chengdu, Deyang, Nanchong, and Guangyuan in Sichuan, as well as Xi'an, Hanzhong, and Baoji in Shaanxi, and Chongqing.
