US to provide $567 million in military aid to Taiwan
According to US media reports, the United States is in the final stages of providing Taiwan with military aid totaling US$567 million, which is the largest military aid case the United States has provided to Taiwan to date.
U.S. Defense News reported on Friday (September 20, 2024), citing multiple congressional staff and a U.S. official, that the Biden administration will use the fastest available tool to provide assistance to Taiwan, that is, to deliver U.S. military inventory directly to Taiwan, following the way of military aid to Ukraine. The $567 million military aid plan has been approved by the Pentagon and is awaiting the signature of U.S. President Biden. As it stands, the amount is almost twice the $345 million in military aid last year. A U.S. congressional staff and official revealed that Biden may approve the military aid plan before the end of the fiscal year at the end of this month.
A U.S. official revealed that the military aid will fund Taiwan’s military training, military inventory, anti-armor weapons, air defense and multi-domain situational awareness projects, and will also include drone projects, the key to asymmetric strategy, to protect Taiwan from attacks by China’s more powerful military forces.
