Five people died in a village in Qinghai due to suspected toxic gas leak
Some netizens reported on social media platforms that a suspected toxic gas leak occurred near Yanqiao Village, Golmud City, Qinghai Province, killing five people.
According to Red Star News, an internet user posted information on a short video platform on Thursday (September 26, 2024) saying that on the afternoon of September 24, toxic gas was suspected to have leaked from the sewer near Yanqiao Village, Golmud City, Qinghai Province, resulting in the unfortunate death of five people in the family.
The report quoted an insider, Mr. Wang (pseudonym), a relative of the poisoned person, as saying that after learning the news on the evening of September 24, he rushed back to Golmud City and saw Grandpa Liu (pseudonym) who was receiving treatment in the hospital and learned about the incident. Mr. Wang said that Grandpa Liu suddenly fainted while going to the toilet in his bathroom in the evening of the 24th and was sent to the hospital by his son for treatment. While in the hospital, Grandpa Liu's son received a call from his family and learned that his grandmother had fainted, so he immediately rushed home to save people. Afterwards, Grandpa Liu's wife, son, daughter-in-law, daughter, and granddaughter fainted one after another. Later, people outside the house smelled a pungent smell, held their breath and went into the house to carry the five people who fainted out to the doctor for treatment. In the end, except for Grandpa Liu, the other five relatives died unfortunately.
Another insider, Ms. Liu, said that she is the grandniece of Grandpa Liu. According to her understanding, a pungent smell could be smelled dozens of meters near Grandpa Liu's home at the time of the incident. It is initially suspected that the toxic gas spread from the toilet to the house through the sewer.
When reporters verified whether there was a sewer gas leak that caused casualties, the staff of the Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau of Golmud City said, "There is such a thing, and the leaders went to investigate," but said that they did not know the time and place of the incident. As for the specific gas leak, the local relevant departments have not yet determined. At present, the roads near Yanqiao Village have been closed and controlled, and the villagers have been transferred to other places.
