According to Agence France-Presse, on August 12, 2025, Guan Jing, a female climber from Hunan Province, China, summited K2 and was struck in the head by falling rocks while descending. Pakistani rescuers are currently awaiting improved weather conditions to recover her body.

Last year, Guan Jing performed a challenging handstand after summiting Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. K2, at 8,611 meters, is the world's second-highest peak. Located on the Pakistan-China border, it is 238 meters lower than Everest but is technically more challenging.

A local Pakistani mountaineering club stated that the accident occurred on the ridge route between Camp 1 and Advanced Base Camp, a section frequently subject to rockfall.
