Sudden power outage in Kinmen, Taiwan
A major power outage hit Kinmen, Taiwan, at noon on Tuesday (July 9, 2024), affecting 40,000 households. After two hours of emergency treatment, Taiwan Power Company restored power completely.
According to Taiwan's Liberty Times, Chen Yuzhen, a Kuomintang legislator in Kinmen County, said that she called Wang Yaoting, general manager of Taipower Company, after the incident and asked him to find out the cause and restore power as soon as possible. Wang Yaoting called back and said that after understanding, there was a equipment failure in the Tashan Power Plant that caused a major power outage. Originally, a total of 10 units stopped operating. Currently, eight units have been restored one after another. Taipower will repair all 10 units as soon as possible to restore normal power supply.
Chen Yuzhen said that she thanked Taipower staff for their efforts to restore power as soon as possible, but asked the other party to clearly explain the cause of the power outage and subsequent preventive measures within a week, and at the same time put forward a specific plan on how to strengthen the resilience of Kinmen's power network to prevent Kinmen folks from suffering from power outages again in the hot summer.
The Taipower Kinmen District Business Office said that the Kinmen power outage that occurred at noon that day was caused by a fault in the switchyard equipment of the Tashan Power Plant. The system automatically activated the protection mechanism, causing all units in the Greater Kinmen area to trip. Only sporadic power outages occurred in Little Kinmen, and the power supply was normal. The total impact was about 40,000 households. After emergency treatment by Taipower, all power was restored within two hours.
Since the power outage happened to be close to noon, many office workers were preparing to take the elevator to eat, but they were stuck in the elevator due to the power outage. A total of seven people were trapped. After the fire brigade rushed to rescue, they were all successfully rescued. The Kinmen County Fire Department said that during the power outage, except for the case of people trapped in the elevator, no other cases requiring rescue were reported.
